Angle Measurement
The whole assembly has the inbuilt theodolite which is used to measure the horizontal and vertical angle. This instrument contains the rotary arms. Using these arms, the angle is measured in the horizontal as well as in the vertical plane. These planes are basically known as azimuth and elevation angles.

Distance Measurement
This is basically an optical instrument in which the ray is incident at a particular point. The time frame between the incident and reflected ray is used in order to measure the distance. In other words, the optical path is measured between the two points to calculate the exact distance.
A reflective target called as Prism use to measure the distance of point, but now some instrument can measure distance by using any object such as Building, Tree etc. to measure distance called Reflector-less Total Station.

Coordinate Measurement
The coordinates of an unknown point relative to a known coordinate can be determined using the total station as long as a direct line of sight can be established between the two points. Angles and distances are measured from the total station to points under survey, and the Coordinates (X, Y, and Z; or Easting, Northing, and Elevation) of surveyed points relative to the total station position are calculated using Trigonometry and Triangulation.
To determine an absolute location, a total station requires line of sight observations and can be set up over a known point or with line of sight to 2 or more points with known location, called Free Station or Resection.
